Foundry 1: Lost Foam

Designed for students aged 14 or older
I this 2 to 3 hour class, participants will learn about the process of lost foam casting. Participants will learn about some of the tools and techniques associated with working foam, by making a foam model. The participants will also learn how to invest their model in a mixture of sand and clay into which we will pour molten aluminum. We’’ll then allow the casting to cool, and participants will learn how to “shake out” their sculptures, and how to remove sprues and vents and prepare their sculpture for finish work. Most students will come away from the course with a better understanding of the process of metal casting and a knowlege of some of the history of metals and foundry- as well as a cast sculpture, made by their own hands!
